Costa Rica in Pictures

Here are some really random photos of our trip to Costa Rica. I was going to put them in order of how they happened and what not, but it takes too long. So here they are in random order. I have tons more, and you can probably see more on mom's blog, Katie's blog, and Andy's blog when they get around to updating.

We went to a butterfly farm. It was really neat. Katie HATES bugs, but we forced her to hold a butterfly. As you can see she wasn't very excited.
We were getting really wet in this picture. The waterfalls were beautiful!

On Sunday we went to visit Andy's mission president. While we were there, the young single adult males stopped by to sing us Christmas carols. When they were done singing, Katie and I were invited into the kitchen to have something to drink with them because we were single too.
Just a pretty view of the valley.

Hooters was across the street from our hotel. Mom was begging to go all week, so we finally gave in and went.A view from the top of Volcano Poas. I have to admit, this was a little disappointing. We each paid $7 dollars to walk 1/4 mile to this spot, and then we were done. At least I can say I've been to the top of a volcano now.

To make things more exciting at the volcano, Katie and I walked backwards most of the way down the trail with Andy and Mom as our guides. Christmas day we had the opportunity to go to a running of the bulls. Before they started the running of the bulls, they had a man from Spain come and do a bull fight. It was neat. I always wanted to go see one when I was in Spain and never got to go.
Running of the bulls CostaRican style. In Spain they let the bulls loose in the middle of a street and let them run wild. In Costa Rica whoever is dumb enough goes into the middle of the arena and waits for a bull to come out. In the above picture you can't see it very well, but on the far right side you can see a man being thrown by the bull. Most of these bull pictures are Katie's.
Just an overall view of the arena, and all the crazy people. We saw several people badly injured and taken to the hospital.
Before the whole thing started, they had a Catholic priest come and say a prayer and bless all the people involved. He sprinkled them with water and everything.
A picture of a man being trampled by the bull. He was an old man.

Katie and I were really sad after we drove four hours to go to the beach and it was storming. But we decided to at least step in the water so we could say we had been in the Caribbean Sea. The water was so warm we decided to go get in our suits and go swimming anyway. The beach at Puerto Viejo was tons of fun. Dad didn't want to stop. He was the last one out of the water. It was raining, but it made for some awesome waves.

Our cool hair do's after playing in the waves.Later on in the week we went to Playa Hermosa in the northern part of Costa Rica. It was beautiful weather that day.

Mom even got in the water this day. The big waves were a little scary for her at Puerto Viejo

When dad first saw the logo of this beer he thought it was the Harley sign, so it was a joke the whole vacation. Katie's dad love's harleys so she found a can of it on the beach and we had to take a picture.
Katie and I at the beach. We were crab hunting with mom .
Andy, Katie, and Running on the beach at Puerto Viejo. Katie and I brought our swimming caps and goggles for fun and to bring back memories.
Dad about to enter the ocean for his first time.On the way home from Puerto Viejo, we stopped at a cocoa farm. This is Andy and I with a cocoa tree. Inside each of those shells is about 50 cocoa beans. As part of the tour the guide took us through the rain forest and showed us some medicinal plants. Dad loved this part. The guide also showed us one plant that the indians used to make marks on their faces. Andy got to try it out.

Katie grinding the Cocoa beans. She got that job because her last name is Grinder.I got the job of mixing everything together because I knew how to make brownies. The chocolate was actually pretty nasty.

We left the lights on while we went on the chocolate tour, so the natives had to push start us.
Saturday morning we got up and went to the temple. It was my first time in Spanish. Katie did baptisms.
Mom, me, and Katie squished in the back seat of our too small rental. They didn't have the car we wanted, so we made do with this smaller one. It saved us quite a bit of money too.

Mom trying to get all our tickets taken care of.
Our first night was spent sleeping in the airport...that is, until they kicked us out. When we finally got there we went to visit a family Andy taught that had a restaurant in their living room. In my opinion it was the best meal we ate the whole time we were there. It was so YUMMY!!

They also gave us a drink called Kas. It was yummy too. I had two glasses full.

Deer?

Today at church my neighbor came up to me and said "Did you see the deer tracks in your yard?" I had no idea what he was talking about so I checked it out when I got home. They were all over!! I guess he found them in his yard and saw where it jumped the fence into my yard. Usually you would think of deer in people's yards who live on the outskirts of town, not downtown. Oh well, I think it's pretty cool. Now I'm no a mission to take a picture of the actual deer in my yard.

Christmas Cookies

I had some sour cream left over from one of my labs at school the other day that was just going to go to waste, so I brought it home and made sugar cookies with it. It was fun. Then I took them around to my neighbors. I love making Christmas goodies. I also made a batch of caramels but I cooked them too long and they are super hard...I'm going to take them to school tomorrow and show my kids that it really does matter how long you cook it. They are making caramels this next week.

Sewing Party

Weekend plans....lets get both sewing machines out and have a party. ...

Jeff and I spent last weekend sewing on a project for his niece for Christmas. It was actually kind of fun. We put on a couple different movies and finished most of the quilt in one evening. Then when we were done sewing Jeff made us some dinner. It was yummy too!

Welcome Home!

Welcome Home Andy!!

For those of you poor souls that don´t speak Spanish...

Unfortunately Andy hurt his knee and had to return home from his mission one month early for surgery. Even though it will be nice to have him home for the holidays it is going to be hard for him. It would have been really hard for me to leave my mission like that...without really being able to say goodbye to the people and the country. Luckily we already have a trip planned to Costa Rica in December so he will be able to go back. Hopefully his knee will be healed enough that he will be able to enjoy the vacation!

Soundtrack of my life...

I saw this on Gina's blog. I thought it was pretty funny so I wanted to post my own soundtrack. Here Goes!

If your life was a movie, what would the soundtrack be?

How to do it:
1. Open your music library (iTunes, Winamp, Media Player, iPod, etc).
2. Put it on Shuffle.
3. Press Play.
4. For every question, type the song that's playing.
5. When you go to a new question, press the next button.
6. Be honest.

Corn Maze

This week for family home evening we went to a nearby corn maze. It's the first time I had ever been to one. At first I was really confused as to what the point was. I thought you had to get from one side to the other without getting lost. But in this corn maze the entrance was also the exit. I was getting really bored walking around in a corn field with no real goals. However, my friend Matthew, shown below, showed me the ropes of a corn maze. He's from the mid-west where there are plenty of corn mazes. He showed me that there are specific stations that you have to go through and find. We didn't have time to find them all because I wasted most of the time wandering around in the field, but we did manage to find a few. It was a lot more fun, when I found out the purpose of the maze.

Family Fun

Here are some pictures from this last weekend in Utah. It was good to see everyone again.

Cute Kids!!
Look Comfortable? The kids played hard all weekend. We went for a short drive to see Rose's new house and before we had gotten a block away from her current house the boys were out!
Jake's position looks a bit more comfy. Dad blushing. There's a first for everything! He's good at embarrassing everyone else it's about time he had his turn.

Conference

I spent my weekend watching General conference in Island park in a cabin. One of the guys in my branch has a family cabin there, so they were nice enough to let us all come and invade. It was nice and cozy.

However, this is what we woke up to Saturday morning. It was snowing a little bit on our way up Friday night, but we did not expect this much. Of course there were a few snow fights and such...you know, it's the only way boys know how to flirt. As we were watching conference, emergency warnings flashed across the bottom of the screen saying "STAY INSIDE. BRANCHES FALLING FROM TREES ALL OVER THE AREA. ROADS DANGEROUS AND SOME CLOSURES" We happened to need one of the closed roads to get home, so we started to prepare ourselves to stay another night. However by the end of the Saturday Afternoon session, it had warmed up a lot and the roads were clear to drive home on. Snow in October is not fun!!

This is a picture of the beautiful colors we saw on the way home.
This is a picture of the corner near my house when I got home. Branches all over up and down the street. It looked like a tornado had come through...but only got the trees.

The Answer

Most of you got it right....probably because it looks so good! It tasted good too. The limes did take second place though.

Here's what I think we added:

Canned Chicken
mayo
mandarin oranges
roasted almonds
sunflower seeds
dash of chili powder
dash garlic powder
dash black pepper
crasins
maybe 1/4 tsp curry powder

I just kind of threw in whatever I had in my house. We only had about 45 min. to do it, so we didn't have time to run to the store.

Iron Chef

For family home evening last night we did our own rendition of Iron Chef. They divided us into groups, and then each group chose a number which corresponded with a "secret ingredient".
It was a lot of fun. My group won!! That made it even more fun. Everyone said it's because I was on the team - a home ec. teacher. However, my group was a great help...especially with the presentation of it. They judged us on three things, creativity, presentation and taste.Instead of telling you which was mine, I want you to all vote and decide which one you like best, based on looks alone. If you were there, please don't ruin it for the rest who will play the game.Secret ingredient: Curry
Secret ingredient: Plantains
